The link above to the Catholic Encyclopedia, under Samson shows an article suggesting that the Catholic church does not take the Samson story as true. Instead, it takes the story to be Jewish legend, passed down from ancient times.

How many other stories are so fantastic that even the largest Christian church could not take it as literally true? The Garden of Eden? Noah? Jonah and the fish? The Tower of Babel?

And if the stories are not true, why do we teach them to children as true? Or even include them in modern day Bibles?

Meanwhile, I'm sure they believe in the literal interpretation of Jesus walkin on water, changing water into wine, raising the dead and so on, though those stories were likely made up a century after the Crucifixion, by people who had never met Jesus, but who inserted them into the hand-copied scriptures to increase their impressiveness to the unwashed masses.

Delilah: Sampson! The Philistines are upon thee!

Sampson: I've gotta get out of here.

Delilah: There's no time!

Sampson: No problem. I can fight 'em off. After all, I've killed 10,000 at one time with the jawbone of an ass. Wait! What's this? My gold bracelet is gone!

Delilah: It must have fallen off while you slept. And you said it was the secret to your great strength.

Sampson: Yes, and the time before that my sandals disappeared.

Delilah: And you said then, that was the secret to your great strength.

Sampson: But I fought 'em off anyway, didn't I? How do they always know when I'm going to be here, anyway?

Delilah: I don't know. They seem to have a sixth sense about it. Quick! Here they come!

(Battle scene. Sampson defeats a dozen armed Philistine soldiers and leaves the premeses.)

(Later) Sampson: Honey! It's me!

Delilah: Oh, Sampson! You're back!

Sampson: Yes, and now we can get back to making mad, passionate love.

Delilah: Yes. We'll be together forever! Sampson, can you tell me something?

Samson: What's that?

Delilah: Can you tell me the secret to your great strength?

Sampson: You keep asking me that. What makes you think there's a gimmick, and I wasn't just born this way?

Delilah: Oh, you can tell me.

Sampson: Well, every time I tell you something, that very thing disappears while I'm sleeping. And then the cops seem to know I'm here. Any idea why that happens?

Delilah: Oh, it's only a coincidence.

Sampson: Well maybe. I guess so.

Delilah: If you'll tell me the secret, I'll be really nice to you tonight.

Sampson: Oh, all right. It's my long hair. Now I'm not going to wake up in the morning with a haircut, am I?

Delilah: Silly boy. Now how could that happen?

Socinus and Servetus are important in the history of Unitarianism. Socinus protested the invention of the trinity as a comprimise in the Council of Nicea, and was banished from Rome for his non-cooperation. Servetus came along centuries later, argued against the idea of a trinity, and was burned at the stake.

In the A Index is Arius, who preached that Jesus was not equal to God, but was a lesser diety, perhaps on the level of an angel. It was objections to his ideas that brought about the Council of Nicea.

Other important events include the offer by Constantine to buy 50 copies of a "Bible," which did not exist, but which resulted in the closing of the canon. Centuries later, the church made this official again, at the Council of Trent, where it was declared that only the Latin Vulgate Bible was authorized, and all competing books, or competing teachings, were heresy.
